 MUNICIPAL CORPORATION







Municipal Corporation is an important category of urban local government. It is the highest local government institution working in each large urban area. It is constituted by a special act of the state government. The first municipal corporation was setup in the former presidency town of Madras in 1687. The state government can declare the transformation of a municipality into a municipal corporation when the population is at least 3 Lakhs and Annual Income is 4 Crore rupees. Every municipal corporation consist of four organs, namely:

1. Corporation council

2. Mayor

3. Commissioner

4. Standing committees

Functions of the Municipal Corporation:

a. Construction, Repair and maintenance of Roads and Footpaths

b. Erection and maintenance of Street lights

c. Allotment of numbers to the Houses

d. Eradication of Contagious diseases

e. Registration and maintenance of Birth and Death registers

f. Imposition and collection of Taxes, Fees etc.

g. Construction and maintenance of Slaughter houses

h. control of offensive and dangerous practices etc.

i. Establishment and maintenance of Maternity, Child and women welfare centres.

j. Establishment and maintenance of Drug testing Laboratories.

k. Construction and maintenance of Auditoriums, Gymnasiums, Parks and Rest houses etc.
